But the second table i.e. the second example above, consists of three columns separated by CONTINUE, where the first column data might consist of non-ASCII characters or something else, but the HTML structure suggested the web page parsing program that there are three columns. I can understand that this is a bit tricky. The trick is to consider each CONTINUE to separate one column in a file The output that I expect from file3 is:
pre.cjk { font-family: "Nimbus Mono L",monospace; }p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; }
Code:
size alt axlt a2xlt a3xlt
waist-(on-half) 14" 15" 16" 17"
hip-(on-half) 24-3/4" 26-3/4" 28-3/4" 30-3/4"
inseam 34" 34-1/2" 35" 35-1/2"

Hi shoaibjameel123,
What happens when you apply your trick to the 1st input file still isn't clear. Did the code I suggested in post #4 do what you want, or did you want the updated 1st input file to include an empty column before the 1st output column my code produced (corresponding to the 1st CONTINUE in the input in that file)?

Hi Don Cragun,
I tried with all suggestions and I thank everyone including you, and as usual (which has happened in the past too!), your solution worked out ideal for me. Given that there are millions of files, one of two might be outliers like the one in example 1. I am running your suggested solution in #4 on my computer and so far I am getting the best results from it. I wanted that the empty column should be deleted and this is what is happening with the output that I am getting. Thanks again for your help. I have coupled your Shell code with a Python code that does more to those tables and both codes are running perfectly now.
