UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

hey guys im new to these forums.....

just wanted so say hello and ask your opinion on something..


what do you think is the best linux distribution


im looking for power in the command prompt and in the gui (im a noob).

also stability is an issue so something thats fit for a server as well.


along with names if you could also supply links.........thanks

There is no such thing as best linux. The only thing concern is how you make use with it to make it best fit for you. There is diffrent linux version for you to try, nowadays the kernel updates are getting the best , less h/ware compability issue too.
The best if you can search in the net for the best Linux for you.

i stated my requirements.........

nice gui ..... poweful console as well as stability for a server

my question: "Why linux only?"
There are many other unix-like systems like freebsd & openbsd ... and others...
You can choose most famous distros such as RedHat or Mandrake...
But the main in all unix-likeOS is console... & console is the same in all of linuxes...

If you want to run a GUI on a production server, you're going to want a relativeley powerful machine... X is a big fat ugly hog...

If you want a GUI for a desktop, and run a small personal webserver, it doesn't really matter which Linux. Almost all of them run X whith a window manager of Gnome or KDE (you choose) if you want eye candy. If you want small, fast and functional in the Unix sense of the word, stick with twm or some other stipped down window manager.

BTW, those work on the BSD's as well.

A lot of poeple will suggest large distributions such as Redhat or Mandrake, due to their ease in installation.
