Exit Shell Script with background job

Hi all,

I am trying to exit a shell script (c shell) while invoking a job (service) that must run in the background:
......

/mydir/runservice &

exit
......

There are downstream jobs and scripts that need to be run, but they all 'wait' for the script to exit. The script 'hangs' and thus the process hangs. Is there a way to force an exit (while keeping the process running in the background)?

Thanks!

Is it your script or your terminal that's hanging? Open references to the terminal may cause things to hang when you try to quit. What if you run the command with nohup?

I am trying to invoke a service remotely (via ssh)...I tried the nohup option into the script. Instead of hanging, I need a 'keystroke' to initiate back a command prompt. Is there a way to invoke a keystroke or some kind?

Thanks

If I understand you correctly, nohup and & aren't exclusive, you should use both.

Code:
nohup program &
exit
