sed

i have a file that contains:

Code:
xxxx
xxxxxx
xxxxxxx
## database.password=OBF:qpdauyrnavsl
database.password=OBF:qpdauyrnavsl
## app.password=OBF:1lte1jmv1yfc1xtv1xtn1yeu1jkn1lqk
app.password=OBF:1lte1jmv1yfc1xtv1xtn1yeu1jkn1lqk

xxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

i'd like to replace database.password=OBF:* with test1 and i'd like to replace app.password=OBF:* with test2

i did this, but did not work.

Code:
sed -e 's/database.password=OBF:$/test1/g' file1 > file2
sed -e 's/app.password=OBF:$/test2/g' file2 > file3

Mod Comment After 109 posts, you still post with a useless subject title and still don't use code tags?

I am not sure if you want to substitute just the part past the colon or the complete string, ie. database.password=OBF: and the string that follows. If it is case one, then just exchange the $ vs .* and all will be substituted. Easiest might be to just post the wanted output and use code tags when doing so!

Assuming you want to replace the passwords of the uncommented lines:
Code:
sed -e '/^database.password/ s/=.*/=test1/' -e '/^app.password=/ s/=.*/=test2/' file > newfile

---------- Post updated at 10:16 AM ---------- Previous update was at 09:57 AM ----------

with in my shell script, i do:

Code:
echo "please enter db pwd: \c"
read dbpwd
echo "please enter app pwd: \c"
read apppwd

sed -e '/^database.password/ s/=.*/='{$dbpwd}'/' -e '/^app.password=/ s/=.*/='{$apppwd}'/' file1 > file2

what is wrong with my sed command here ? i want to replace dbpwd and apppwd with whatever i type in.

That's the correct one:
Code:
echo "please enter db pwd: \c"
read dbpwd
echo "please enter app pwd: \c"
read apppwd

sed -e '/^database.password/ s/OBF:.*/OBF:'$dbpwd'/' -e '/^app.password=/ s/OBF:.*/OBF:'$apppwd'/' file1 > file2

Check it.
