new pine user on pop3 acct

I recently started using unix in osx,and loving it! I am now wanting to use pine for email. I installed it using fink and besides it not being the most updated version, it seems to work fine, except that every message I erase seems to come back everytime I log in. It is a pop3 account. I have also had a couple of times where it would not log in to my inbox and it gives the message "user has no maildrop". I tried to create the inbox under user/mail, but that didn't work. the next time I started a new terminal session, it logged in fine, but still with the full mailbox everytime. Is there a setting in config, to remove the email permanently?

As well, I have tried to mail from the command line. It seems pretty slick, but the email doesn't come from my email address, but my user name on my computer. It seems to give out my ip address etc... Is this safe, or is that stuff sent from a regular email anyway?
