My unix is possessed!

I'm a n00b. after awhile on the internet my KDE desktop switches windows on it's own. copies weird texts into my termnial window. Generally acts like It's being controlled remotely.

I'm using freebsd 6.2 on an intel box. where should I begin to look?

hmm - sounds like somebody out there has root access, you may have a nice new warez server on your desktop. If your box is that far gone, you'll have to restore from a known good backup after you format the disk(s).

You can also try things like a root kit finder - www.sourceforge.net has root kit hunter.

Generally unix is less prone to all the bad stuff out there so you must have been some interesting places. Be sure to at least use a firewall and maybe a nat on your router/dsl modem. PS: going to warez sites is not always a good idea Smilie

That's where u are wrong. I don't run anywarez on my server. and it's desktop. I was just trying to PC-BSD.

Rtkit hunter picks up nothing.

Do you have a firewall installed somewhere between you and the 'net? If you have an open machine that someone can query, you might have open, unsecured ports live and on the 'net. If so, someone could access your X Window session via one of the X ports (6000 I think is the main one). Do a netstat -a and post that (in a code block if you please), of course only if you don't have a firewall of course.

You might try the scanner over at grc.com. Try Shield's Up! and see what it scans on your system.

Turn off vnc, ssh and change passwords.
