Help in exponentiation in AWK

Hi,

Sorry for the previous confusion. It is the exponential power of the 2nd field for each line in the file.In other words, it is 2 power of the 2nd field value.

And I get the error:-

awk: line 7: syntax error at or near *

Hi,

I would like to seek help in exponentiation in bash. I have a file which is a.txt which has two fields. I would like to get the second field to be the exponentiation power of 2 in this case.

I tried to implement:-

cat text.txt|awk '
{
count[$1]= 2**($2);

}

END{

printf("%f\n", count[$1]);

}'

But it gives me value 0. Anyone please help to pint point me what mistakes did i make for the above bold formula.

Thanks.

Hi mirusnet,

Thanks for the reply.I tried to use your formula method and apply to mine type of structure.

cat text.txt|awk '
{
count[$1]= 2**$2;

}

END{

printf("%f\n", count[$1]);

}'

But the error still pops up. I am using the above method due to the associative array which can be assigned for each line in AWK.

Please help. Thanks.

From the awk manual
Quote:
x ^ y
x ** y
Exponentiation: x raised to the y power. 2 ^ 3 has the value 8. The character sequence `**' is equivalent to `^'. (The POSIX standard only specifies the use of `^' for exponentiation.)
