what's wrong with that loop ?

hello everybody,

here's my code

Code:
mkf ()
{
    INDEX=0;
    while [ INDEX -ne $1 ]; do
        touch "file$1.f";
        INDEX=$INDEX+1;
    done
}

when I type
Code:
mkf 10

the loop seems to act infinite

and only the last file of the loop is created, in the example below, there just is file10.f in my folder.

What's wrong with that code ?

thanks for your help

Regards

Seems you missed a $
Code:
mkf ()
{
    INDEX=0;
    while [ $INDEX -ne $1 ]; do
        touch "file$1.f"
        INDEX=$((INDEX+1))
    done
}

I've been placing $ like you wrote it and (( )) but it's still not working

the loop is still acting crazy

Missed the obvious.. it helps when reading the question Smilie

The touch line should actually be:

Code:
touch "file$INDEX.f"

(and INDEX should probably start from 1?)

I really need to sleep Smilie

even though I changed the line, it remains the same odd infinite loop, I need to type ctrl+c to stop the execution.
And my folder comes up with the final value of the loop as "file10.f" if i type mkf 10

Shouldn't it be:
Code:
mkf ()
{
    INDEX=0
    while [ $INDEX -lt $1 ]; do
        touch "file${INDEX}.f"
        INDEX=$((INDEX+1))
    done
}

It's the old "it works for me" thing!

Code:
$ cat MyTest
mkf ()
{
    INDEX=1;
    while [ $INDEX -le $1 ]; do
        touch "file$INDEX.f"
        INDEX=$((INDEX+1))
    done
}

mkf 10

Code:
$ ./MyTest

$ ls
MyTest		file10.f	file3.f		file5.f		file7.f		file9.f
file1.f		file2.f		file4.f		file6.f		file8.f
