Question inet_pton function

Hello,

First of all: please pardon my inexperience. I'm new to Unix/Linux. My apologies upfront Smilie
I'm trying to use the inet_pton() function. I've created the below script based on what I found in the manual (man inet_pton):

#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/socket.h>
#include <arpa/inet.h>

inet_pton(AF_INET6, "2001:0610:1A00::", test);
printf("%s",test);

I named it btest.script and then ran chmod 777 to make it executable. When I execute it using ./btest.script I get the error:
syntax error near unexpected token `AF_INET6,'

To me this says that it just doesn't recognize the inet_pton() function and that I should call some shell or programme before trying to use it. But I know my logic is flawed here, I'm probably missing a huge basic step, but if someone could please take a minute to explain what's going on, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanx!

Aha!

I see why my post has been moved! So I've tried to implement it into a C script as follows:

#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/socket.h>
#include <arpa/inet.h>

int main(void) {

struct sockaddr_in servaddr;

inet_pton( AF_INET, "195.241.78.68", &servaddr.sin_addr );
printf("%u\n", &servaddr.sin_addr);
return 0;

}

This compiles succesfully, but I'm quite a beginner when it comes to C, though the syntax is similar to PHP with which I am more familiar. This script returns different integers every time it's run. Could someone explain why or explain what it is that I've actually coded here? Feedback greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

It does not change behavior for me. inet_pton converts 195.241.78.68 to the (big-endian or little-endian) network form of the address.

It uses the 195.241.78.68 as the base. Unless you run this on machines with different architecture, like a Linux PC and Sparc station, there is no reason for it to change.

That I know of.

aha!

Aha! In my case, I indeed am running this on a Linux machine... Sorry, maybe should have mentioned it. Didn't realise it was of importance. Any tips on changes needed to get it working on Linux?
Thanx!

I ran it this on a Linux box and it worked correctly:
Code:
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/socket.h>
#include <arpa/inet.h>

int main()
{
    struct sockaddr_in servaddr;

    inet_pton( AF_INET, "195.241.78.68", &servaddr.sin_addr );
    printf("%u\n", &servaddr.sin_addr);
    return 0;
}
