Go through the Linux distros and select one. You could also look at Solaris 10 since that is open source as well.

Bug

That is a tough one, because I have used many and found a lot of good distributions. It also depends on your needs, what software packages you want included in the distribution and what package management system you are most comfortable with. What works for one person may not work for you.

My suggestion would be to get hold of a few distros that come as Live CDs so you don't have to commit to installation unless you decide you want to install that distro. Many distros offer such Live CDs, and most of these Live CDs include a hard disk installer should you find that the distro that catches your fancy :-)

I personally use Ubuntu on my desktop machine. It's based on Debian, which is a really nice robust server OS, but it's got more recent end-user desktop software packages like Gnome and OpenOffice. In my experience, Ubuntu is a lot more stable than other end-user distributions, but if you find it doesn't support your hardware, you might try Fedora, which has a more bleeding-edge kernel.

For a purely "try it out" experience, try Knoppix. It's the oldest and most advanced bootable "live CD".

Hope this helps! It sounded like you wanted a specific recommendation, so there ya go.
