unp - a shell frontend for uncompressing/unpacking tools
SYNOPSIS
unp [-u] file [ files ... ] [ -- backend args ... ] ucat file [ files ... ]
unp is a small script with only one goal: Extract as many archives as possible, of any kind and from any path to the current directory,
preserving the subdirectory structure where needed. Is a Do-What-I-Want utility and helps managing several extraction programs without
looking for needed options for the particular tool or worrying about the installation of the needed program.
Run unp without arguments to see the list of supported archive formats.
The special version ucat acts as wrapper for commands that can output the extracted data to standard output, like bzip (bzcat), gzip
(zcat), tar, zip and others.
USAGE
unp extracts one or more files given as arguments on the command line. Additionally, it may pass some options to the backend tools (like
tar options) when they are appended after `--'.
There is also a special option (-u) which is very useful for extracting Debian packages. Using -u, unp extracts the package (i.e. the ar
archive) first, then extracts data.tar.gz in the current directory and then control.tar.gz in control/<filename>/.
NOTES
unp will try to decompress into a FILE.unp if it get trouble with existing files. But don't count on this feature, always look for free
working space before using unp.
Unlike gunzip, which decompresses the file in the target directory of the source file, unp uses the current directory for output.

DESCRIPTION
Returns $str with all alphabetic characters converted to lowercase.
PARAMETERS
o $str
- The string being lowercased.
o $encoding
-The $encoding parameter is the character encoding. If it is omitted, the internal character encoding value will be used.
RETURN VALUES
$str with all alphabetic characters converted to lowercase.

By contrast to strtolower(3), 'alphabetic' is determined by the Unicode character properties. Thus the behaviour of this function is not
affected by locale settings and it can convert any characters that have 'alphabetic' property, such as A-umlaut (A).

when i'm trying this
gunzip filename.tar.gz it always says not in gzip format

I'm trying to use a combination of gunzip and tar to unpack and unzip a *.tar.gz file. I tried gunzip ~/myfile.tar.gz | gtar -x
This will unzip the file, but it won't unpack. Any hints?

Whenever I try to uncompress file.tar.gz I always get message 'tar: directory checksum error'. I think because of this some of the directories might not be uncompressing properly. Why do I get this message? I do uncompress on UNIX Solaris 5.8. Oh, if I do the same thing on Fedora 3 everything works... (14 Replies)
gunzip fnam.tar.gz
After this command execution... .gz file no longer exists... and only fnam.tar is present.

I am using UNIX command to unzip the files
gzip -d9 DW_*.gz
The Xmls are compressed using gzip and it is received in the .gz format at UNIX box which need to be uncompressed.

What happened was that every single file in every subdir under web got an exstension like index.php.gz

At the moment, even if the tar fails (e.g. because of lack of disk space), the gzip still runs successfully.
