resolve one IP on DNS server

Hi!

I have a dns server (bind) with 2 zones forward and reverse and i need to resolve one ip completely different. I have add to /etc/hosts and i can ping but i can't do nslookup. I've tried to add the dns server responsible to resolve that ip on /etc/resolv.conf without success. So how can i resolve that IP address without creating a new zone. Thanks!

Just adding the dns server responsible for resolving that one ip to your resolv.conf file is not going to do the trick. The real question here is why that server is not resolving that ip or why your requests for that host is not being sent to the proper dns server.

With more information, like the ip and or host and the dns server that hosts it, we might be able to give you a better answer.

Check your nsswitch.conf file to see if your search order is files first, followed by DNS. Otherwise, DNS will be checked before your hosts file. If DNS matches, then your host file won't get looked at.

With your current config, does your I.P. get resolved or does your nslookup report that it can't resolve the I.P.? If the I.P. is getting resolved, search through your zones on each of your DNS servers to see where name resolution is occuring. Or you can run your DNS lookup while pointing to each of your DNS servers seperately to see which server is causing you problems. You may have had a problem with a zone transfer from your master DNS server, etc, so you'll need to verify that each server has the same zone details.
