Updating my kernel...GULP

Lol I wanna update my kernel so i can have the newest latest greatest wonderful stuff that i cna get. I've got a couple questions first! Where do i d/l the new version, How do i set it up, will i lose any inormating upon being successful or even if i royaly screw up for tha tmatter...lol. Right now i'm running RH7 and i would like to run RH 9 so i can run the newest progs but i've got things set up like my FTP and stuff that i downloaded for RH 7 so will those still work or will i have to delete them and set them up agian? Haha thanks for the help, i don't know where to start with this one...lol.

if you are running red hat ( like you said you were Smilie ), the kernel should just be a package like any other program/package in redhat. you know how to use redhats package manager? so you can update your kernel that way.


HOWEVER! if you want to do it the REAL way Smilie , go to the SOURCE

so i went to your link and downloaded patch2.6.5.bz2 ... lol so now all i have to do is run it? Haha i hope so! i'll wait for you to reply before i do it just cause i don't know enough about this if it goes wrong and i've gotta fix it...lol. thanks

well you cant run what you downloaded, it is an archive, not an executable file. un-bzip that file, and itll probably have a read me and install file which you can read. read those, and if you are unsure of anything ask back here.

Ok i bunziped teh file but it's just patch-2.6.5 . I don't see any hlep directories haha i'm still new to this so i've prolly jsut over looked it and it's right infront of me or somthing! lol. Where would i find the help for this file?

you still need the entire source for the kernel. since you are using a packaged distribution you probably dont have a copy of the source on your computer. you could grab it off of your redhat cd, or go back to kernel.org and download the whole thing, and the latest patch aswell.
