I would suggest, Ubuntu 9.10.

Its easy to install and use, especially for beginners from windows.

I second that. Ubuntu is easy to use for someone coming from windows.

When you download the Ubuntu ISO, you are downloading a livecd; thus, when you boo the CD, you can try using Ubuntu briefly, before choosing to install Ubuntu onto the hard disk.

Thanks.
But i am comfortable with linux for over 5 years and i am not new to unix/linux.
does it contain all the necessary drivers. Because i installed solaris(open solaris) and i was facing the LAN problem (LAN Drivers not found) and many others.
Any comments?

I installed a couple different distros on my laptop in a dual boot configuration before I tried Ubuntu. 9.10 was definitely the easiest
to install. It picked up my wireless, my lan, my touchpad, even the
two special buttons for turning my wireless and sound off without me
having to look for any drivers. Give it a try and I think you'll really
like it.

If you're installing on a laptop, you probably want ubuntu for it's compatibility, being how weird laptop hardware is.

Ubuntu is shockingly wasteful as far as Linux distros are concerned, however. It's not a problem on a modern machine, but still, you can compile a whole distro on machines Ubuntu's installer throws OOM-killer messages on.

Lastly, don't overwrite Windows completely. Shrink it but keep something that works. Windows may be the only way to install things like BIOS updates. And make your restore DVD's before you redo the machine.
