Always i activate or desactivate a interface my /etc/hosts is cleared :-(
How are you changing the permission and what are you changing them to?

What is the output from 'ls -al /etc/hosts'?

Yes thats sure it's /etc/hosts.
And the content of my /etc/host.conf (file that i had never seen) is :

Quote:
# The "order" line is only used by old versions of the C library.
order hosts,bind
multi on
i guess the problem its there....perhaps

In response to Lazydog:

Quote:
alvaro@atm117:~$ sudo chmod 444 /etc/hosts
alvaro@atm117:~$ ls -al /etc/hosts
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 34308 2008-09-26 12:22 /etc/hosts
alvaro@atm117:~$
The permissions dont avoid system to modify etc/hosts.

I said my "/etc/hosts" is cleared, but this isn't exactly what happens, The file is 90% deleted and the 10% of the file is changed with some older ip and some kind of strange strings like:

"----------------------------" !\\\\\-----------\\\\\\" <------strange streams

Could you have a script that is changing the hosts file?
Maybe one you are not aware of?
