outgoing smtp slow

Hi all,

Im having some issues with slow outgoing smtp I'm thinking maybe my internal ip is not on the whitelist?
How do I go about testing or checking this?
I did telnet into the port and it was not slow at all but when users send email using an email client or the webmail client it takes several minutes to send out a message. So i just want to see what areas i need to check to resolve this.

Im on a centos 5.x box with sendmail, spamassassin as spam filter, and using openwebmail as the webmail client.

Thanks again

When you say it's slow - does the message stays too much in the Outbox or it's being received after a while ? It may be the case that there's some queue, big files sitting somewhere, spamassassin stuck for some reason, load on the server itself - what does the top shows ?
Checking the SMTP's IP whiltelist status can be done most easily on spamcop.net and spamhaus.org. Check the log files on why the messages may be stuck, usually there's an error message with corresponding code like 4xx or 5xx.

hi thanks for the reply
I resolved this issue.
There was in invalid DNS IP address in the TCP/IP settings.
Because it was invalid the sendmail kept trying to look it up before it went on to the next dns ip address. By that time either the mail session would logout or mail would be sent out 2-3 mins later. So I deleted that IP address and now email zips out fast now.

Redirecting outgoing packets

I'd like to find out how to redirect Outbound packets. So instead of having packets go to IP1 as they normally would, have them go to IP2 instead. I believe this is possible using IPFW but I'm not sure. I've played with it, but haven't gotten too far. Any ideas would be appreciated. (1 Reply)
