domain linux server, open ports?

Hi all - i currently run a domain strifex.net. This domain has a dedicated IP address and in having that, should be able to run a ventrilo VoIP server from it. I uploaded all the needed files etc... and am able to connect to it, if and only if i enable DMZ to my local machine - then i am able to see and connect to my Ventrlo voice server. As soon as DMZ is disabled, it seems my firewall, and all my friends' firewalls, stop my server from talking with their clients.

Could this be a issue with my ports on my website? Originally i thought i might be because people were using ventsrv.strifex.net and not my dedicated IP, but even using that, still causes problems.

So my question mainly is...

Using SSH access to my remote server, could i enable ports (both TCP and UDP) so that ventrilo is for sure being able to send and recieve signals without a problem.

Ventrilo needs the following:

TCP 3784/3785
UDP 6100

How would i go about 1. checking to see if they are open, and listening/recieving okay and 2. if they arent open, how would i know, and if they arent open, how do i open them?

Hope someone can help!

Thank you

Those ports may be currently closed on your machine, what is the OS and what firewall you're using ?
