Data DNS question

The company I work for has me setting up a bind server, this part I am having no issues with my question is we host 2 web-sites on one box using virtual domains in apache. The CEO of the company want it so that he can type this in

http://*****.com

http://*****.net

Instead of

http://www.****.com

http://www.****.net

I know when apache see's the second it looks at the header to decide which web-site to send them to. My question is in bind which record do I create to perform what they want as I know with many web-sites out there you can just type the http://****.com to go to that page. Any help would be very grateful as this is driving me crazy

Just set up an A record for whatever.com. Then most people would do something like:
www CNAME whatever.com.
to allow www.whatever.com to work as well. If your CEO wants www.whatever.com to fail, omit the CNAME line.

I thank you for your reply but I am still having a few questions. I tried setting it up the way you listed and that works fine but maybe I need to re ask the question a bit different. So here goes

We have our first web-site

http://www.tomax.com

Then we have our second web-site

http://www.retail.net

Now both these site run out of a single apache server on the same IP address on the same server. What the CEO is asking for is for that to still work but also have it work so that users and customers and hit the web-sites using

http://tomax.com

http://retail.net

I thought I did this in DNS but I am unsure as I haven't been able to get it to work. The apache server runs virtual domains for each site on the 1 IP address, a question is there maybe something I need to change in Apache or can DNS handle what I am trying to do. A great example is that I can hit

http://unix.com

or

https://www.unix.com

And hit this web-site that is the same thing we are looking for. If I need to add a second nic to the server and such let me know as that might be the answer.

Thank you again

I'm not a web server expert so I can't help there. But I'm not clear if the DNS part is working yet. Do these commands

nslookup tomax.com
nslookup www.tomax.com

return the same ip address? If so then the DNS part of the problem is done.

Thank you again for the quick answer. It looks like it still has to do with DNS maybe you could just look over this zone file and point me in the right direction

Thanks,

again

Edit took out useless info after issue was fixed

Remove the last 3 lines in the file

Up at the top, probably under the NS record, you want:

@ IN MX 10 www.appdriver.com
@ IN MX 20 server20.appdriver.com
@ IN A 63.146.93.15.

Actually, you should not need to repeat that @. Most people leave it out after the SOA record. But You can leave it in if you want.

63.146.93.15 is now used up. It will never again appear after the A in any A record anywhere. And the reverse entry for 63.146.93.15 will point to tomax.com.

At the end of the file you can use:
www CNAME tomax.com.
