DNS problem

Hello!

I´ve got a problem with the dns on one of our servers.

When i try to look someting up with either nslookup or ping i get the folowing error message.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# nslookup sun.com
*** Can't find server name for address 127.0.0.1: Unspecified error
*** Default servers are not available
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my resolve.conf is pointing at my dns servers and the nsswitch.conf file includes both files and dns. Does anyone know where the error might be?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
resolve.conf=

domain here.com

nameserver 192.168.128.2
nameserver 192.168.128.3

Every DNS server must be authoritative for the address 127.0.0.1 Your named.boot file should contain something like:

primary 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa db.127.0.0

And db.127.0.0 should exist and point 127.0.0.1 to localhost.

Also every box needs an /etc/host entry for 127.0.0.1.

There are other ways to achieve this result, but every host must always know that 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address.

Is 127.0.0.1 in your /etc/hosts file (should be set to localhost)

Can you ping your nameservers via IP address?
Which is first in nsswitch.conf - files or dns?

Is this Solaris? What version?

This is Solaris 8.

And i have a 127.0.0.1 localhost in the hosts file.
The nsswitch.conf file is first file then dns. I tried changeing it so that dns was first but i go the same result.
Yes i can ping anything by ip. Its just the DNS thats not working.

Is your system that you have the problem on a DNS client only, or is it set up as a DNS server? If it's a server, have you checked Perderabo's suggestion?

Is there a firewall set up between the problem system and the DNS servers? It may be blocking the requests.
