Could anyone please suggest how we can check in Linux if a user or a group name is already existing? In case of a user the command should also be able to specify the user with a given directory and shell. We can of course check this using a grep command but since that is just a pattern match,... I'm trying to set a group of users to login to do a required super-user tasks without knowing the super-user passwd.
For example...a user popodude logs in as self with passwd..system accepts the password & then automatically asks for the super-user account passwd.

NAME
groups - display a user's group memberships
SYNOPSIS
/usr/ucb/groups [user]...
DESCRIPTION
With no arguments, groups displays the groups to which you belong; else it displays the groups to which the user belongs. Each user
belongs to a group specified in the password file /etc/passwd and possibly to other groups as specified in the file /etc/group. If you do
not own a file but belong to the group which it is owned by then you are granted group access to the file.
