Backup using fbackup
Dear All,
We have Universe database on HP-UX Servers, when we take back on DDS3 it completes around 48 Gb data on just one tape. As per DDS media specs it can hold upto 24 GB compressed data. How it is managing more than double data..?

DDS3 can hold 12 GB. The drives do hardware compression and HP currently estimates a 2 to 1 compression ratio and that is where the 24 GB comes from. 24 GB is intended as an average rate, and it is intentionally low. If your data has already been compressed by a good compresssion program like gzip, the tape drive will not be able to compress it very much further and you would not get anywhere near 24 GB. But most data will compress much more than 2 to 1. That must be the case with your data.

Have you done a frecover to actually check the data is on the tape? This is the most important part of doing fbackups. :-)

As Stretch said..be sure to checkup your backup. We also have a Universe DB running on HP-UX.. I am telling you, there is almost no way you will put 48Gb of data on a DDS3... as far as I know. We use DATAPROTECTOR solution from HP.
