Logical volume sharing

Dear all,

I have a server where all the space in the volume group got filled.

I have another server where I have got some space.

Can I use the logical volume of server B to a directory under server A.

Pl let me know if there are steps to do this.

Hi,

sharing of disk space between servers can be done via network file sharing protocols, but this is independent of the volume management system locally used on the various servers.

If you decide to go with network sharing, look for infos about nfs protocol.

Dear Fra,

I tried using NFS , where if i try to mount the LVM to the remote server directory , The mount is happening , but the directory is converted to a block special file.

So I dont know how to put datas in the block special file.

Hi,
may you please post *exactly* what you are trying to do? (commands, output, configuration files that you're editing...)

thanks

Hi Fra,

On Server A. I have a logical volume

/dev/vg02/exportdump which has around 30 GB.

On Server B I have a directory /export_dump

I am doing an NFS mount in Server B as

mount -F nfs serverA:/dev/vg02/exportdump /export_dump

In this case /export_dump is changed in to a block file .It was a directory before.

So I just wanted to know that is it possible to remote mount a Logical volume to a directory in another server.

You don't mount Logical volumes, you mount file systems ! (That are in/on the logical volume...) and so you export File systems with NFS (Network File System) protocol.
mounting the other exported file system on a directory should show you its content...
If not you missed something
What is in serverA:/dev/vg02/exportdump ?
Where is it mounted in serverA ?
How did you export it anyway since you export File systems?
This is typically what you should have or see on serverB with bdf:
Code:
serverA:/var/opt/pvcs
                   1048576 150952 841560 15% /var/opt/pvcs

Dear Vbe,

Thanks for your reply..

I tried what you had given in your earlier message. Is this case I can see the contents of Server A in Server B.
But the customer does not want it. He does not have any space in Server B , for which he wants to put the data in logical volume of Server A .

But he wants it to be put in server B and that should get stored in Server A.....pretty confusing right....

And also one doubt....

Can I use the logical volume of one system for storing data for another server.
