N-Class DVD woes

Having a problem attaching a DVD drive to this N Class server and just wondering if anyone’s come across this before.
As there’s no space internally for a DVD drive it has one of these:

see attached pic (the rear connector says it's a single ended device)

Which I’ve tried connecting to the back of the N Class server mainly using the onboard LVD/SE connection circled below on the right but also on the other SCSI card circled on the left.
The server does boot with its current config so I have tested everything on the boot menu aswell as from ioscan on the 11.00 install (to rule out incompatibilities with the OS).

see pic of N-Class rear

Nothing has worked, the boot menu shows the two internal disks along with the fibre channel cards but no matter where the DVD’s plugged in it doesn’t show up.
I’m not sure on the different standards of SCSI so maybe it’s just incompatible? I’ve tried a rake of different SCSI id’s so can confirm it’s not a conflict.

To further test I’ve used an L2000 server with two scsi adapters to test a few bits and found that although it would pick up a disk array and DLT tape drive (which the N Class wouldn’t) it would only pick up the disk array on one of the cards and the tape drive on the other one (even though they looked the same). So although both cards work they seem to be different standards.

This server wasn’t able to detect the DVD drive on either card. As I don’t have another external DVD drive to test (I was able to swap out the internal drive to at least test that) I tried a DAT tape drive that was originally connected to the N class server. That wouldn’t detect on either the N Class or the L2000.

I’d tend to say it’s a SCSI adaptor problem on the N-Class but the fact that the DVD/Dat drive aren’t showing up on the L2000 makes me think that maybe the N-Class is just running a different standard of SCSI and although I really don’t think this is the case. It’s hardly possible that the DVD / DAT and SCSI controller are all goosed.

I’ve butchered another old L2000 and stuck in another SCSI adapter, with the new card in the N-Class it now picks up a DLT drive (Quantum 4000 i think) which is progress I suppose.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here? N-class is out of support...

Did you do a ioscan to see what interfaces they were?
SCSI C87x Ultra Wide Single-Ended ca support DVD-ROM
DVD-ROM 305 is a ultra wide DVD-ROM 304 is a Fast wide...(so connect to SCSI C896 Fast Wide Single-Ended...)

Cool, I'll look into it coz I don't have a clue about scsi standards.

Could you recommend a link to some SCSI info, don't know how many different standards there are and how to identify them Smilie
