Was it previously working?
Are you up in multi-user mode?
who -r
Have you run out of disc space in root or /var filesystems?
bdf
Is inetd running?
ps -ef|grep "inetd"
Anybody messed with inetd configuration?
ls -la /etc/inetd.conf
An firewalls in the way? e.g Windows firewall.
Has your ethernet cable fallen out?
