Migration from HP-UX to Solaris/Linux

Hi eveyone

Ours is an application hosted on HP-UX 11 and we are trying to migrate the server to different flavour of UNIX. We are actually looking at the option of migrating it to Sun Solaris or Linux.
We are trying to evaulate the pros and cons of migrating our application to Solaris/Linux.
The critical factor that can influence our decision is the ease of migration bearing the cost of human resources involved in it.

We have few weblogic instances and pro*c Programs and then Java web services embedded in our application.

Could anyone in the forum suggest a way forward.

What is the aim ? Reducing cost ?

The main aim would be the ease of migration.

I would move your thread to SOLARIS or LINUX forum if you dont mind...
I would understand someone posting here a post like "help in porting Solaris to HP-UX"
but not the other way round, the specialist you want answers from are the destination OS not the source ( what can an HP guy say about SOLARIS?...)

Let me know...
All the best

While Im at it,
SUN published a blueprint on the subject ... (I have at home...)
I suggest you get it and read it then think hard:

vbe is right.. I really wonder and ask you this question..

What did you find in Solaris/Linux which you did not find in HP-UX? Also, kapilraj's question is different..

He asked you what is the aim of this migration? and not the aim of posting the question here..

In case, you would like to upgrade from a 11.11 - 11.23 - 11.31 of HP-UX, members here can help you with pros and cons. Here the case is HP-UX - Solaris - Linux... The one who answers should be good in all the three to comment. Moreover, being good is not enough as we really dont know what you have in your setup. It depends on a lot of factors!

Finally, its very good to see that you try hard to find an ease way to migrate. But, that ease way would also be tough.. Since, migrating an entire setup is not so easy.. Depends on a lot of factors and your type of setup.

All the best!

I am OK if you want this thread to be moved to any other forum if it is more appropriate.

The current servers are out of date in terms of the capacity and we had to migrate them to the new servers.
Hence our client got the suggestions from the in-house architecture team whose sugestion was to move the apps to Linux/Solaris.
We were asked to analyse which would be a better option for migration.
Hence my question appeared in the forum

Hi Vbe

Thanks for your document. I have gone through the document and it provides some kind of an insight to our migration project. Thanks for your help once again.
