So is this two different sed scripts, or should one sed script do both files?

What are you trying to accomplish with your attempt? It's blanking out the lines that you need to output from files 'f1' 'f2' and 'f3', and then you skip blank lines with the grep and pipe that into wc for a count of lines that don't start C along with a count of lines in the desert1.txt (dessert1.txt?) file.

Simplify ... get rid of grep and wc, you don't need these with the sed script built to your specifications.

Turn off default printing with sed (use man to see what option) and then tell sed to print only the lines that start with 'C' (again look at the man page). Your subsitute command should be taken out, you don't need to change the line according to the specification, only print it. So while you do need to match for lines beginning with 'C', and you do so correctly in the matching part of the subsitution command, you don't need to actually use the substitution command, at least not for the first specification.

Get that one right, and we'll deal with the second spec.
