"Bucket Brigade" files?
Is it at all possible to use some combination of FIFOs and files to achieve the following:

A new file is created that is 0 bytes in length. As data is written to it, it grows. When it reaches a predefined size limit, it begins to discard data at the beginning of the file as new data gets written to it. So if I defined a file that only retains 1 gig of data, I would be guaranteed to only have the most current 1 gig.

I am working on a home PVR project and I am trying to duplicate what I had in the Hauppauge WinTV2000 software with the pause file. I was able to define a pause file that had a maximum of 4 gigs and it would be constantly written to as the old data was dropped. I have, as yet, been unable to reproduce this in Linux. However, I have a strong suspicion that I'm missing something...

I don't know the answer to your question, but there are a few PVR projects existing already that may be able to use your skills.

Mythtv is one of them.
