An extremely dirty way to do this is to rename the ls binary to oldls and write a script called 'ls' that calls oldls and removes the extra space. I only mention this because you are really looking for a quick and dirty and not recommended solution.

Yeah, that is fraught with peril, subjecting the whole system to your odd little need. Each UNIX command is a wrapper for a UNIX Kernel or library call or two. Date is time(), localtime(), strftime() and mktime(). ls is stat() and dirent90, since directories have just entry names and inode numbers, and inodes tell you the rest.
