I just unmouted the backup disk. Then did

Code:

mail:~ timgolding$ sudo rm -rf Files_Backup_1

Then restarted MAC server followed by

Code:

Well I have never seen a unix or Linux behave like this.
There is a long-standing unix quirk where it was possible to mount on top of a directory which contained files and thus hide the underlying files.
In this case the O/S appears to have prevented the problem by changing the mountpoint on the fly (though I have no proof of this).

An earlier poster thought this was OS/X and there are clues that this is an Apple Mac of some sort.
What Operating System and version is this?

its quite an old mac.

Code:
ProductName: Mac OS X Server
ProductVersion: 10.3.9
BuildVersion: 7W98

Needs up grading. I think what happened was a few week backs i noticed that the harddisk was not mounted. So i had to reboot to mount it again. I think that between this time my backup cron shell script was just writing to Files_Backup_1 when the disk wasnt mounted hence just creating the backup files on the system at /. So when i did reboot to mount the disk it couldnt go to /Volumes/Files_Backup_1 because it already existed so it made the mount point "Files_Backup_1 1". If that makes sense. Thanks 100000000 for solving this issue (i hope).

[QUOTE=timgolding;302448120]I came in this morning to find that our mail server was down. Couldn't connect. I looked at logs. The logs complained about no space on device. I run df and it comfirms that the system disk (mounted on /) is at 100% capacity.

Hi everybody,
I have similar problem - byt after restarting the machine, computer do not work . Some processes during starting system run out of disk space.
Could you help me, wah can I restart mu computer?
Machine is Silicon Graphics Indy with IRIX 6.5 OS.

Please start a new thread.
Worth mentioning whether you can log in as root or not, and whether you have an Irix release kit and a CD drive.

If nobody mentioned it or you had not gotten around to it yet, prod hosts should have something like:
  • A frequent (hourly?) cron checking, on every dev, space and, where applicable, inode use (the fancier FS make more inodes on demand), that sends email at any > 90% or whatever, so you can intercede before a crash or outage.
  • A daily cron job to zip/remove all logs/files for a prior day saves both space, inodes and accidentally damaged or lost files. Since prod support might be looking at the files, you might just nice -19 zip up day-4 (spans long weekends) files starting at early normal work hours (in case it has problems, why lose sleep?). You can zip by file type, application or everything for one day. Of course, sometimes this raises the challenge of how to change logs and other long running files at midnight or at least daily.
  • The backup should remove zip files over a certain age that have been backed up, so space use should be constant/ascending, long term.

@DGPickett
Please also start a new thread with a suitable title to match your subject.

Also see post #6 where we can deduce that the O/P has his finger in the dyke despite using "gzip" and rotation of log, data backup and mail files rotation. This one was way beyond vague generalisations and pseudo code.
There was also a ghost mount on the system.
