Debian

Hi guys,

I have used mkbootdisk to create (with -iso option) an iso file for centos servers. I think this commands are only available for redhat's family. Debian brings mkbootbut it only support floppies and not iso format. My question is, is possible to create an iso file on a debian5 server, just like mkbootdisk does for centos?
Can I compile mkbootdisk on debian?

What precisely does mkbootdisk do for you? A generic rescue disk usually works great for me, never needed one fine-tuned to my distro.

mkbootdisk create a boot CD you can use in case /boot has some problems or the server doesn't boot. mkbootdisk(8) - Linux man page
mkbootdisk, I believe, uses the kernel files. If you upgrade your kernel's server you have to run again mkbootdisk.
Do you mean the generic rescue as the install DVD1 of debian5?

I often use Gentoo minimal ISO's as rescue CDs. They boot to a generic root prompt from which you can mount your local disks and chroot into your own system. They support quite a lot of hardware. You don't boot into X this way, though.

The kernel doesn't need to be precisely the same unless you intend to load your own modules from disk. I can understand making custom boot floppies, since almost nothing but the most critical drivers will fit...

Yes, but a simple question comes to mi mind, why debian doesn't have mkbotdisk similar command. I couldn't find mkbootdisk source (tar file) to try to compile it on debian. Also, I'm looking for why debian doesn't have a similar command? Debian has mkboot but it only support floppies, Nowadays there're not floppies devices on servers.
Don't know if you understand me. With a similar command as mkbootdisk you do nothing but insert your CD and boot your server. Everything runs as always. It simply saves your live.
