How can I be assured that my machine is secure against buffer overflows, remote packet sniffing, and brute force attacks?

Why does the internet have to be so scary? Why can't we all just get along?

Staying up-to-date and using tripwire and packet-filtering solutions can help DECREASE your risk. However, risk is always there, but TioTony is right in this case. You just have to be smarter than the guy trying to break into your computer.
