MAC Address spoofing
There is a question in the SCO section asking for information on how to change the MAC address of a NIC. Is there a valid reason for wanting to change the MAC address?

2 simple examples where it might be needed:
  • If you've got a duplicate of an existing address in the same broadcast domain (in the same switched network). The probability of this is actually pretty high. The MAC address consists of 48 bits, 24 of which are reserved for the vendor, which leaved 24 as vendor-bound ID. That's only just above 16 million, compared to more than 1 billion PCs out there, not counting servers/routers/... (Source: Wikipedia)
  • If you've got some hardware or information that's bound to a specific MAC address, eg. cable modems or as some kind of dongle.
