How to install Ultrix 4.2 on Qemu?

Hi
Problem changed.
I've got a message showing on the screen which says
Guest has not initialized the display (yet)
Any how I can fix this?
Thanks Jack

Hi,

Are you certain that you have a version of Ultrix for the CPU type, from memory Ultrix was DEC native so probably PA RISC and Alpha processor types will be required.

The Qemu Hypervisor will only support the OPEN RISK Version of Ultrix which I think will need to be Version 4.5 with it's own libraries installed - it does not support shared libraries.

Also the version that you are using is from around 1991, there is a much later version from 1995 that you should be looking at.

Regards

Gull

I notice that there is an alpha emulator which comes along with qemu as well. If no mips, can I use the alpha emulator instead. My goal is to get the OS running? Let me try it.. thanks for your information.

Update: If I switch to 4.5, which emulator(s) should I be using? qemu-system-mips -L . -m 64 rootdisk.img Still didn't work
It used to work on gxemul with cygwin display exported. But I don't count on the X Server of cygwin anymore, I
want it to run standalone using qemu..
THANKS
Jack

I don't have ultrix 4.2 in binary (only source code), but I have ultrix 4.0. I think the procedure is the same for both versions.

You need:
1. Ultrix 4.0 tape
2. simh vax simulator

Configuration file:
Code:
$ cat vax.ini
load -r /opt/local/share/simh/VAX/ka655x.bin
attach nvr nvram.bin
set cpu 64m
set rq0 ra92
set rq1 ra92
set rq2 ra92
set rq3 cdrom

attach rq0 d0.dsk
attach rq1 d1.dsk
attach rq2 d2.dsk
;attach -r rq3 cd.iso

attach -r tq0 ultrix.tap

set rl disable
set ts disable

set xq mac=08-00-2B-AA-BB-CC
attach xq en1

boot cpu

Installation:
Code:
$ simh-vax vax.ini

VAX simulator V3.8-1
NVR: buffering file in memory
TQ: unit is read only
vax.ini> attach xq en1
