Question Please HELP this stupid lady!!

Hello to all. When you are finished laughing, could somebody PLEASE tell me how to completely uninstall the free bsd operating system from my other computer? My dear, dear Hungarian friend (who is a 'Unix-nut') installed it several months ago, and now that computer is sitting unused in a house with 3 children and lots of homework. Smilie My two younger kids will barely touch it, and I don't want to use it, either; I really dislike the lack of compatibility for most of the things I use a computer for. (Goofing off.) And now, the funny part: I DO NOT KNOW MY OWN ROOT PASSWORD! Smilie Janos laughs it off when I tell him I want it; he is kseriously kobsessed with unix and Linux. Yet, he says he doesn't have time to finish building it. That's why it still is no good for too many things. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I thank you.

Uninstalling FreeBSD won't do you any good, you'll have a useless computer with no operating system at all.

What you need to do is just install Windows over it. The Windows installer will happily trash the FreeBSD and write over everything so you have a Windows comptuer with no remaining traces of FreeBSD on it.

Your friend Janos sounds like a real censored. It is your computer, if you want the root password he should give it to you, or else help you put a different OS on it for you. No matter what *HE* thinks the best OS is, it isn't his place to make that decision for you and your kids. He is right that FreeBSD or any other Unix based OS could do everything you need it to, but if he isn't willing to spend the time finishing the build and teaching you what you need to know he has no business trashing your computer for you.

Moderator's note: While I share your evaluation of Janos' actions, we try to watch our language here. --- Perderabo

why dont you share the machine to have both the OS, not sure if FreeBSD allows that, but most of the linux allows sharing windows OS with it. that would be the best treaty Smilie

I had no idea I could do this without the root password/holy grail. I certainly will try it; also, rh, I too agree with your evaluation of Janos' actions, even though I love him dearly. Thank you so very much for your help; I'l let you know what happens. Smilie

Perderabo,

Sorry about that. Reading too much slashdot I guess. :-)

Hammer & Screwdriver

Hello again, peoples! Smilie
I'm sorry it took me so long to remember to come back and thank everyone for their help. rhfrommn was right on the money - the Windows installer will trash everything in sight! Bought the disc (even though it practically made me physically ill to put even another penny into Gates' pockets) and it happily strangled FreeBSD. We are back to two computers for all the homework, games, etc. and I sincerely appreciate that all who helped, took the time to do so. Guess it's kinda sad, though. I would be more than willing to learn to use the FreeBSD, and teach my kids, on a finished computer with this OS, and be free of the Gates scourge. Ah, well.... Thanks again, everyone!
