I had this happen on an H70 on which I was trying to install beta 5.3 bits. I had 5 of these H70's, the f/w upgrade went perfect on 4, but the 5th bricked and I had to box it up and send it back to the vendor.

Question Is this 27L4378 the same floppy drive used in Thinkpad?

AIX 5.2 circa 2007, and 5.3 circa 2005

No

The system never gets to the point where one could boot from a CD (ie the double beep, hit F5, etc)

I did some more reading, and it appears that the only ways to recover from this are to replace the main board or install a floppy (27L4378) and try to re-flash the prom. I found a floppy online for < $10 and it's on the way.
I am going to upgrade the firmware for a production 7026-6C3 so I would like to be prepared in case the update fails and corrupts the firmware.

However, I find that the machine does not come with the floppy drive. When I look for 27L4378 online all of the returned items are described as Thinkpad's floppy drive.

Just want to know from your experience whether this is the same drive that 7026-6C3 uses?

Thanks and Regards

Yes, that is correct. I bought one online for < $5.

Bug

Thanks. I can go ahead to order one online then.

Unfortunately I am located in HK and shipping cost alone from the 'nearest' online shop is > $10. Nevertheless, it is still a good bargain.
