if it's an older machine like H70, M80 ... you have to update microcodes to the latest level in order to get AIX 5.3 running

What type of system is it?
If it has a service processor you can connect a terminal to the serial port and pressing any key will bring up the service processor menu.
This should show the firmware level.
This will also allow you to update the firmware from the floppy drive.

Check here for the firmware latest level and update proceedure:
http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/firmware/gjsn

If it is a 91xx machine type (p5xx - any level of firmware should support AIX 5.3) the hardware support docs are here:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...1r3s/index.jsp
Search in the left search box for what you are after.

If it is a pre power5 machine (machine type p6xx or 70xx) try here:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...ctbysystem.htm
