IBM HMC in VmWare NIC sl0 issue.

Hi There,

First of all I'm new to *nix world, so bear with me and English is not my native tongue Smilie

Now I'm working on the HMC 7.3.3.0 ServPack:0 base_version:20080402.1 to make it work in VmWare (testing in Workstation)

I've got HMC installed and realized that network options in GUI are giving out an error and it wont open the NIC's settings.

I do have two NIC's allocated for HMC by the VmWare, however I believe the problem is that HMC is expecting to see at least two NIC's one as eth0 and second as sl0. The second adapter is what I'm struggling with.

Both eth0 and eth1 I can run Dhcp client on and get an connection. What I'm trying to do is use udev to rename eth0 to be sl1. 30-net_persistent_name.rules adjusted accordingly, however after restart all is back as it was before ie. eth0 and eth1 only shows up.

I believe there is a script running which is overwriting this rule, am I right?

Does anyone been able to resolve this problem? If so can You point me the right direction or maybe some sort of script I need to create and run for this to work? I'm really lost here and there is not much info on internet ether.

I was following guide on this website run by filosopfizer , but is already closed obviously.

If you need any more info as logs etc let me know and I'll stick them here.

I really will be glad if anyone has some input on this.

Thanks a lot

there is no any known problem with sl0 interface on HMC. sl0 interface is a dial-up interface for Call-Home feature of HMC. In VMware you don't have a dial-up connection and as far as I concern, no possibility to emulate such a connection. So you don't need it. Just forget about its existence.

Zdarova agent.kgb,

I see, as I said new to this and seen it on HMC we have here. Now so what might be causing the network pref giving out?

It's not really big deal but I like to have stuff nicely done if possible. Do you know how to resolve this glitch maybe, do you?

cheers

Depending on the POWER system you are trying to manage (nothing older than POWER6!) your problems may have to do with:
a) the age of the HMC code you are trying to run in VMware environment - Now I'm working on the HMC 7.3.3.0 ServPack:0 base_version:20080402.1
b) HMC code (of that era) has no support from IBM for working under VMware. If it works - you are a lucky person.

So, please verify the systems you are trying to manage are old enough AND their firmware is old enough (the proper steps for updating firmware still has "Update HMC" as step #1)

Hi MichaelFelt,

Thanks for replay.

I think that I have not explained properly my problem, which created bit of confusion I would say.

HMC is working fine in VmWare env, but the GUI is not happy about the network and is giving out an error. The result is that I can't setup network using GUI.

What I did was, get rid of restricted shell, so I can gain root access to HMC. In cli I can setup network now no problem.

It will be nice to see if I can get the GUI displaying the network settings, but I guess I have to live with it as it is.

I actually thought that someone already was able to resolve this issue.

Anyway thanks for help and effort.

It is "our pleasure", or we would not be replying Smilie

Thanks for thanking us.

Bottom line - HMC was not designed for a VMWare environment - probably would work fine on physical hardware and/or there was a fixpack for that level (as you state working as root you can use the GUI interface).

Many things can be done using the CLI interface - manuals for the various levels of HMC available here: IBM - HMC resources
