you can use whereis filename

Code:
root@Delta1# whereis limits
limits: /usr/include/limits.h
root@Delta1#

Tharsan,

This is all fine for a known/registered file, but:-
Code:
$ oslevel -s
6100-08-02-1316
$ ls -l robin
ls: 0653-341 The file robin does not exist.
$ ls -l /tmp/robin
ls: 0653-341 The file /tmp/robin does not exist.
$ touch /tmp/robin
$ whereis robin
robin:
$ PATH=$PATH:/tmp
$ whereis robin
robin:
$

From the manual page:-
Quote:
Locates source, binary, or manual for program.
.... and this was not listed as part of the original request.

Regards,
Robin

OK,
What rbattel meant was, if you are searching/looking for 'source, binary or manual programs' such as mklv, xtab, man etc.., (I am giving just a few examples, there are thousands of them). You can find the location using whereis command.
Generally under '/usr/sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/include, /usr/share, /etc etc..,

I guess what he wanted to show you is something as below
Code:
root@nim01:/root# ls -l /tmp/wms
-rw-r--r--    1 root     system           49 Nov 20 12:00 /tmp/wms
root@nim01:/root# whereis wms
wms:
