Uniform LUN size

Hi,

Is there any advantage is making all my storage LUNS ( hdisk ) of uniform size. Currently the LUN's are having different size () eg: 50G / 60G / 75G etc ).

I am planning for a storage migration....so should i go for uniform lun size or with current LUN size pattern ?

Regards,
jibu

There is no technical advantage in having LUNs of the same size.

Swap space is allocated in a round-robin pattern over multiple swap spaces, so if you use LUNs for swap (spaces) and if you want the resulting swaps to operate optimally you should make the swaps of equal size which suggests the underlying LUNs to be of equal size - but that is rather far-fetched.

There may be some similarly far-fetched points, but there is no direct reason to make LUNs have equal size. You can even increase LUNs in size after using them, so, even if they have been of equal size once, they might be of different size now.

I hope this helps.

Some organizations consider it easier to have standardized sizes for LUNs.

There is no one size fits all - but we are getting closer with "thin provisioning". LUNs can be defined very large, all the time, but physically they take up much less space. The danger is that systems actually use the space Smilie

Thanks for the replies..

So i will stick on with my current "non uniform" LUN sizing.... This will give me an additional option for "old LUN" to "new LUN" copy while migration and makes my migration ONLINE ( without taking a down time and do a tape restore )
