Creating RPM

HI All,

I have couple of doubts on creating RPM in AIX. I have AIX 5.3 version. I installed rpmbuild on it. Before creating RPM in AIX I just wanted to know whether I can install the RPM created in the other linux flavors like Ubuntu or Red Hat or I need to create the RPM in AIX alone to install in AIX.

Apart from creating as RPM do we have any other option to compile the source and bundle it, so that I will be able to move to other environments where I dont have C libraries to compile my source.

Please let me know if we have any other options too.

Thanks,
Vijay

RPM for any other linux quite probably won't be the right architecture, i.e. won't run even if you force it to install somehow. Not useful.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Is there way in AIX to compile and distribute to other AIX? other than compiling as RPM.

Thanks.

You have to get the SRPM or build one from sources. Then build it on an AIX box and it should be usable on other AIX boxes of the same or maybe lower level of AIX.
The building process is the same as on Linux, mostly.

But before you spend hours of solving problems when building one (can be tricky on AIX), you might have a look here at Michael Perzl's site:
My Open Source packages for AIX and Linux on POWER

There is complete RPMs, SRPMs, and hints how to build/install etc.
