Default Route add fails

AIX version 5.3
when I try to add default gateway
Code:

# route add 0 192.168.100.254
Or
# route add default 192.168.100.254

I get the error

0821-275 route: socket: The file access permissions do not allow the specified action.

searching on google i came across similar errors
0821-279 writing to routing socket: Do not specify an existing file.

however searching for solution i came across
Code:

Code:

To add a default gateway
# route add 0 192.168.100.254
Or
# route add default 192.168.100.254
To remove default gateway
# route delete 0
Check your routing table:
# netstat -Crn
Flush Routing Table
# route -f
Check what is in the ODM Database
and after get the values from ODM # odmget -q "attribute=route" CuAt and after you will delete but at value level # odmdelete -q "value= "net,-hopcount,1,,default,10x.xx.xx.xx,"" -o CuAt if you wish to do from permanent way out of smitty you need to add an script at the end of inittab, verify your /etc/rc.net rc.net.out // /etc/rc.inetd
smitty chinet
smitty route

But none of the above worked.

The only thing which resolved the issue was

Code:

chown root:system /usr/sbin/route
chown root:system /usr/sbin/gfsinstall
chown bin:bin /usr/sbin/dtappintegrate
chown root:system /usr/sbin/ifconfig
chown root:system /usr/sbin/init
chown root:system /usr/sbin/ping
chown root:system /usr/sbin/rpc.pcnfsd
chown root:system /usr/sbin/telinit
chown root:system /usr/sbin/uucpd

Anyone knows why this happened ?

what were the owners:groups ?
looks like a bad chown by someone affected /usr/sbin where most files should belong to root... I saw once somthing of the sort happen (maybe not under aix, cant guarantie (bull AIX?) where after some patching on network we could not connect, I saw nothing ( because I was root...) it was long ago (Y2k preps...).. I had to change owner to get things working again... Since I didn't do the job, I always wondered if this was true and not an excuse for someone's mistake...

I suggest avoiding working with direclty for this task. use chdev or smitty route.

Can you post the output of the following commands?

Code:
lsattr -El inet0
ifconfig -au
netstat -rn

the default gateway is already set. why are you trying to set it again?

It is set only after I change the permissions before changing the permissions I was getting this error when I try to setup the default gateway

0821-275 route: socket: The file access permissions do not allow the specified action.
