AIX

Hi,

I bought a second hand IBM machine model 9110 - 510. This machine is connected to a terminal (orange color text) through a serial port and when I bought the machine it shows its model and it ask for user id and password but i tried many without luck.

I want to reset the root password but I don't know what is the procedure that works with this model with the terminal?

Does it tell you what version of AIX it's running? I believe you can boot off of the installation disk and go into maintenance mode and reset the root password there.

The Terminal is Just the in/output console.
And resetting root's password requires nothing special at all just follow the following instructions .
Also you need the installation media and CD/DVD Drive.

It doesn't show Aix version and it does not recognize the installation CDs also.

In the SMS menu, when you scan for boot devices, it should finally show you your disks and the AIX release (not TL or SP, just release) that is contained.

Is this your private machine? You might be able to reinstall it from NIM (on Linux - How to install AIX 5L).

In a corporate environment you might already have a NIM server, otherwise configure one.

In both cases define the resources based on the installation media you have. Boot from NIM into maintenance mode to change the password or reinstall the system.
