AIX

I am interested whether should AIX Admin make upgrade of firmware on power systems or IBM support should do it thanks in advance :-)

I don't know whether they should or not but our AIX shop performs our own firmware upgrades on everything we admin. Never had IBM support do it unless they were in house for some other HW repairs and a firmware upgraded was needed.

Thanks for reply.. I asked that question because I think if I be able to do all the upgrades by myself it will be good challenge as an AIX admin.. simply administering AIX box does not seems serious responsibility :-)

Just remember one basic fact. In general a firmware upgrade CANNOT be backed out! Also if an upgrade goes wrong it could leave the system in an unusable state. I had the experience a few years ago when upgrading the planer firmware on an F50 the power went off half way through. As a consequence the whole mainboard had to be replaced. Luckily the F50 was covered by an IBM hardware contract so it was not a complete disaster!
