p570 seeing LTO drive but not 3582 library (smc0)

I have a p570 running AIX 5.2 ml 10. We just got in a IBM 3582 library. The library is connected directly to the lpar via fibre cable.

I've installed:
Code:
Atape.driver 11.7.7.0
atldd.driver 6.8.4.0

After a reboot, I can see the one tape drive:
Code:
root@rgtsscsr60:/etc # lsdev -Cc tape
rmt0 Available 0H-08-00-0,0 LVD SCSI 4mm Tape Drive
rmt1 Available 0M-08-02 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)

I can also run a tapeutil command against it (tapeutil -f /dev/rmt1 status) and get the status of the drive.

My problem is that no smc device shows up. That is, I can't see the library.

Did I miss a step somewhere? Is there some other fileset I need to install?

Thanks (in advance) for any help you can provide.

I am not using any backup software other than wanting to use tapeutil to control my library/tape drive.

What does the documentation say what has to be installed driver like? Does a cfgmgr throw any complaints? I remember way back, that HP jukeboxes showed a lb0 as library device. Not sure what that smc device would show up as.

This might help in case you don't have it already:
IBM - IBM TotalStorage 3582 Tape Library Setup, Operator, and Service Guide

Edit:
Just noticed there is not much help in this PDF about configuration AIX wise. The device will be smc<n>, I guess you knew that - now I know it too Smilie Will post an update when I find more.

Some more documentation:

http://utcc.utoronto.ca/ftp/docs/IBM...%20Systems.pdf

4.2 is about installing drivers for AIX etc.

Let us know if you've found what it was.

Update

I did find that control path was disabled. I enabled control path. I deleted my tape drive all the way through the fibre channel it was connected to.

Then rebooted tape library. Then ran cfgmgr. I can see the tape drive, but still cannot see the library (smc or anything else that says library) when I do an lsdev.

Reset configuration on the library and redid the whole config again, as well as deleting everything on the AIX side, too, and re-discovering. Problem still exists.

I have all the manuals and read through them. All I can see is that I need to install atape.driver and the and atldd driver.

If I get this working, I will certainly post the resolution, but at this point things do not look good.

Finally got this working. Changed library from sequential mode to random mode . Apparently, smc0 won't appear if a 3582 is set in sequential mode. After three reboots of the tape library, smc0 finally appeared.
