RS/6000 error 888

I have a friend who has the following error message on his LED:

888-102300-0C5

I've tried searching, but can't find anything.

Any ideas?

tks.

OMG, i thought i will never see this three-digit-code again! ;-))

First, this means you are using a classic R/6000 with a microchannel bus, because the modern PCI-systems have different error codes.

(Blinking) "888" on th R/6000 3-digit-display means "general unrecoverable error" and is similar to the "blue screen of death" in Windows or a kernel panic in Linux. "102-300-0C5" is a more detailed description of the error condition which you should be able to locate in the hardware diagnostics manual accompanying the machine. I did a google-search for "3-digit-code 888" and found this:

IBM

Switch off the thing, power it back on, cross your fingers and pray. Perform the diagnostics routine described in the link and most probably you will have to call a technician - i wonder if there is still hardware support for these systems.

Good Luck.

You should perform the diagnostics routine regardless of the system coming back or not. Some hardware problems will cause intermittent failures and having a system eventually crash every few days can pose severe risks to your operation and/or data.

Further, examine carefully the error log issuing "errpt" and/or "errpt -a" respectively. You might find hints of what was going on preceeding the crash.

At any rate, take the RULE NR 1 of PROBLEMSOLVING to heart: a solved problem is one which causes are fully understood and explained, not one which symptoms are not showing at the moment.

I hope this helps.

This code tells you that your server is dumping core. 888 aka "crazy eight" is the still signal for that and has nothing to do with the servers architecture.

102 tells you about the dump that was caused for reason 300 and 0C5 tells you the result of the dump itself. In your case the dump failed to start.

There are at least a dozen different places in the IBM online documentation giving details, e.g. here: Help
