Hi,
according to IBM support, only the following USB flash drives are supported for use with AIX 5.3 with 5300-09 and AIX 6.1 with 6100-02 and above:
- Lenovo USB2.0 Essential Memory Key, part number 41U4944
- Kingston 4GB DataTraveler, USB2.0
- SanDisk 4GB Cruzer Micro Flash Drive, USB2.0

The AIX USB-host controller supports only USB1.1 on AIX 5.3 with 5300-09 and AIX 6.1 with 6100-02 and only the ISO file system (read-only ISO9660) is supported on these drives. Basically configmanager should autodetect these devices and create special devices for them.
If you try to connect any other usb drive you won't be able to make it work.

VIO 1.5 is about AIX 5.3 TL7.
VIO 1.5.1.1, fp10.1 is about AIX 5.3 TL7 SP1.
VIO 1.5.2.1 (latest VIOS 1.x level), fp11.1 is about AIX 5.3 TL8 SP1.

So you have no chance as USB drive support only came in at AIX 5.3 TL9
