Aix 5.3 or Linux?

Hey I have an IBM

IntelliStation Power 9114 Model 275 1.45GHz Workstation

1-Way 1.45GHz Power4+ Processor (5223)
2GB Memory (4x 512MB Dimms) (4447)

and was told that AIX 5.3 works on it, and that there was problems with Linux installs.

Can I download AIX 5.3 or do I need to buy it from IBM, or is there a version of Linux that can work on it?

Regards

you have to buy aix 5.3 from ibm

if you want a free operating system, you could use fedora for ppc

here for example:

If you're buying AIX get the latest version, AIX 6.1.

Also, I understand that Fedora are looking to drop ppc as a supported architecture, so you might want to try Debian Linux instead (no disrespect to Fedora intended!)

ok great, I looked into Linux and I was told that with this:

GXT6500P Power Graphics Adapter

there would be trouble installing the powerpc version of Linux on it due to the video card.

for example Fedora-ppc on IBM 9114-275 (Intellistation 275)

"I have installed Fedora core 9 ppc on the Intellistation 275 and the
Intellistation was flawless. I to have the problem with the color. The
Graphics adapter in the 275 is the IBM GXT4500P. The resolution is 1280
by 1024 but the colors are off"

Would the ppc version of say Gentoo or some of the other versions work with this video adapter problem or should I investigate purchasing Aix from IBM or wait till a version becomes available on ebay?

Thanks for any clues on this one.

In principle you would have to buy it, but:

AIX is usually sold with every R/6000 / p-series system and IBM is quite lenient about the OS software. You can't download it, but if you ask an IBM representative you have a very good chance to get AIX 5.3 without any further cost.

AIX doesn't run on anything save for IBM R/6000 and p-series machines so there would be no point in copying it. IBM sells its Unix-hardware only with AIX-licenses along so your machine has definitely been sold with an AIX license already anyways. Which is the reason for IBM being so lenient about it.

I hope the helps.

Hey thanks bakunin, reading between the lines, are you are saying that Linux won't work on the machine that I have due to the adapter problem and I should get Aix instead?

Recently I had the same problem. AIX licence is connected to hardware. You can legally use AIX version up to version support had been bought. So contact last owner/admin or call IBM.

Do not 'waste' POWER box on Linux, you can install it everywhere.
