Removing this files will not affect anything per se. But you need to make sure that the files are not required.

in the /var/spool/mail ,i have an entry as below, after doing a ls -ltr
-rw-rw---- 1 ai mail 3898 Sep 02 11:26 mei
-rw-rw---- 1 root mail 22900 Nov 08 14:55 root
shouldnt the ai and mei be the same just like root, root?

We have all the user account in a home direcory where their mail is stored and retrieved by email clients. We do however have /var/spool/mail with all the user accounts in it as well Our sendmail.cf is configured to use /var/spool/mqueue as the queue so .what is /var/spool/mail being used... (3 Replies)

When I look at the users file it seems as if every email sent/received is in that user file! Is this because IMAP is being used or is that just how sendmail works?

Hi,
How can i get my mail on either /var/spool/mail or /var/mail?
I use mail and sendmail command to send mail. But everytime I send mail it comes to my outlook inbox and when I check with mail command I get the message "No mail for siba". (Note siba is my user Id.) (2 Replies)

Hi,
I have some problems w/ the sendmail. I see that messages are queued in the /var/spool/mqueue
and they are never sent to the recipients. This problem just suddenly started without any modifications in the current configuration. I already started and stop the sendmail and it did not help.... (3 Replies)

I have a bunch of cron jobs in the crontab. For some reason mail from the cron jobs started going to /var/spool/mqueue instead of being sent.

My box is running with AIX 6100-06 and Im the root user of this box
My /var gets filled up often to 100%
When I investigate I find that it is the below file which increases rapidly
/var/spool/mail/pdgadmin
I dont know why this file is growing up.

->I am using AIX 6.1. One of the file system full which is /var filesystem.
->/var total size is 5.00 GB.
->And inside the /var file system spool/mail folde is taking around 2.9 GB.

Description
All of the commands are located in
The command compacts uucp system spool directories and associated subdirectories. If system is ALL, then all existing uucp system spool
directories are compacted. Otherwise, only the specified system spool directory is compacted. If no system is specified, is compacted.
If is stopped before it is finished, it can be restarted without reprocessing directories. The command continues processing where it left
off during it's previous instantiation.
The command makes a per system spool directory and associated subdirectories for each of the specified systems. For example, if system is
mk3 and if the local system name is penny, the following directories are created:
/usr/spool/uucp/sys/mk3
/usr/spool/uucp/sys/mk3/C.
/usr/spool/uucp/sys/mk3/X.
/usr/spool/uucp/sys/mk3/D.
/usr/spool/uucp/sys/mk3/D.penny
/usr/spool/uucp/sys/mk3/D.penny
The command moves files from old spool directories to new spool directories. Because the structure of the spool directories has changed
from older versions of it is necessary to respool old spooled files to new spool directories in at least two instances:
o When installing the current version of
o When creating a new system spool directory for each system.
In the latter case, it is necessary to move files from to the new spool directories. To ease this task, moves files that have been spooled
in one of 4 formats and respools them under the new spooling structure. The format is specified by the -t# option, where the number sign
(#) can be any one of the following:
o Original spool - All files are in
o Split spool - Contains the subdirectories
o Modified split spool - Contains all subdirectories listed in split spool, and
o Used when a new system directory has been created and spool files must be moved from the DEFAULT directory to the new system directory.
The command forces a connect attempt to the named systems even if recent attempts have failed, but not if the file prohibits the call. For
example, the file will prohibit the call if it is the wrong time of day. Thus, the should be monitored for messages about the connection.
