/home:>echo "First Line.\nSecond Line.\nThird Line. " > tmp.txt

/home:>cat tmp.txt
First Line.
Second Line.
Third Line.

if you want to edit an exisiting file that is delimited by a certain string, say ~, you can do this.

to replace all delimiters (~) to \n
/home:>cat orig.file | tr -s "\~" "\\n" > new.txt

copy the new and edited file to the orig.file
/home:>cp new.txt orig.txt

i made a script to update a lot of xml files. to save me some time. Ran it and it replaced all the the files with a 0kb file.
