Find occurances of a directory and count

I am writing my first shell script to do the following:

Find all occurrences of a directory from the pwd
Delete the directory (which is a hidden directory)
Provide feedback w/ the number of directories deleted

The problems I am having are two-fold:

The user may not have the appropriate privileges to delete the directory
grep -c counts the total number of lines returned, rather than the total number of unique occurrences of the directory

For example, I want to let the user know how my directories called "delete_me" were deleted. If the directory structure is /.delete_me/subdir1/subdir2, grep -c returns "3" (/.delete_me, /.delete_me/subdir1, and /.delete_me/subdir1/subdir2). I want to tell the user that 1 directory called ".delete_me" was deleted. How can this be done?

My other problem deals w/ the user not having privileges to delete the directory, or getting feedback on all the directories accessed during the "find" that they don't have permission to read. Ideally, the script would be run w/ root privileges, but I can only get it to run w/ the privileges assigned to the user running the script.

A copy of my code is below. I am just testing, so right now I am not deleting any directories, just finding them and printing to stdout.

NAME

     pwd -- return working directory name

SYNOPSIS

     pwd [-LP]

DESCRIPTION

     pwd writes the absolute pathname of the current working directory to the standard output.

     The following options are available:

     -L      If the PWD environment variable is an absolute pathname that contains neither "/./" nor "/../" and references the current directory,
	     then PWD is assumed to be the name of the current directory.

     -P      Print the physical path to the current working directory, with symbolic links in the path resolved.

     The default for the pwd command is -P.

     pwd is usually provided as a shell builtin (which may have a different default).

EXIT STATUS

     The pwd utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs.

STANDARDS

     The pwd utility is expected to be conforming to IEEE Std 1003.1 (``POSIX.1''), except that the default is -P not -L.

BUGS

     In csh(1) the command dirs is always faster (although it can give a different answer in the rare case that the current directory or a con-
     taining directory was moved after the shell descended into it).

     pwd -L relies on the file system having unique inode numbers.  If this is not true (e.g., on FAT file systems) then pwd -L may fail to detect
     that PWD is incorrect.
